DONUT Personal Protection Services
The patented Donut personal controlled descent device is the offshore industry standard. It was designed and developed in response to the Piper Alpha tragedy, with the cooperation of UK regulatory authorities and North Sea operators.
It is virtually impossible for an evacuee to gain entry into a launch life raft without the use of the Donut personal controlled descent device. This is due to the difficulty caused by opposing wind and sea conditions.
With the use of an additional strap that attaches to the liferaft's painted line, the user is guided into the liferaft during descent. More importantly, once in the water, the risk of the user being swept away by the current is alleviated. The Donut provides the user with a guaranteed entry into the safety of the liferaft.
Advantages of the Donut over conventional evacuation methods
- Cost - if properly maintained and recertified, the Donut need only be purchased once during the useful life of an asset.
- Inspection - Donut is only required to be inspected once every 4 years within a recognized inspection scheme.
- Fixed means, cannot be reached, cannot be used - Donut is highly portable allowing the user to choose the best time and position to make his escape.
- Multi-user system, people may have to wait for their turn - Donut is one man, one use, no need to wait for others.
- Physical effort - Donut does not require any physical force from the user to operate.
- Once at the bottom, the user has no choice but to enter the water. - Donut allows the user to stop his descent and lock himself above the water, remaining dry, visible and warm to await rescue.
